The Selwyn White Memorial Handicapped Doubles Tournament was played in warm & windy conditions at the Taieri Tennis Club on Sunday morning 25th February 2018. The 16 entrants included two top juniors: Devon Bell (16) of Outram, and Trey Russell (15) of Momona. Partners were drawn at the start of the day and a round robin tournament played. After 4 hours and 28 closely fought tennis matches the pairing of Lindsay Connor (-30) & Ross Merrett (+30) were undefeated, a rare feat in this format.
A great tournament where members ranging in age from 15 to 79 years, and ranging in ability from casual social to very strong competitive, can play side by side on an even playing field (court).
The great Peter Bathgate (79), a Life Member of the Taieri Tennis Club, had been watching the matches unfold when an injury to fellow Life Member Stephen Brenssell left an opening on court. Peter stepped in to partner Anne-Marie Warman for the last half of the tournament. It was wonderful to witness Peter’s effortless stroke making and deft touch once again as he and Anne-Marie secured two wins together.
