Taieri Mixed team defeats top ranked Balmacewen 4-2

This season the Taieri team playing in the senior Mixed grade has been the best performing team. Sitting fourth out of twelve teams following the first round, Taieri met the top of table Balmacewen team in hot conditions indoors at Edgar Centre on Saturday.
Core team members Keith Ruthven (captain), Peter Smith and Kerry Lockhart were joined by promising junior Kayla Godkin who filled in for the injured Wendy Bain.
Taieri took an early lead winning the womens doubles 9-7, before Balmacewen levelled winning the mens doubles 9-8. Taieri extended in the mixed doubles with Keith & Kerry defeating Russell Hancox & Andrea 9-7, and Peter & Kayla defeating Peter Dick & Sarah Stevenson 9-4. This put Taieri up 3-1. In the reversed mixed, Balmacewen took the first rubber when Keith & Kayla went down to Russell & Sarah 7-9. In the final closely fought match Peter Smith & Kerry defeated Peter Dick & Andrea 9-7, with Kerry executing a series of winning volleys in the final game to give Taieri the rubber and take the match 4-2.
